Steps Involved in Filing ITR Online

It is that time of the year again when you have to start preparing to file your Income Tax Return (ITR). Even though the last date for filing ITR is 31st July, it is advisable that you initiate the process early to avoid last minute stress. The Income Tax Department of India has made the entire tax payment and filing process simpler than before and you can now file your ITR online.

Mentioned below are the steps involved in filing ITR:

  • Open the tax e-filing website of the Income Tax Department of India and register on it.
  • Log on to the website. Here, your PAN (Permanent Account Number) is the userID.
  • After logging in on the website, view your Form 26AS. The TDS mentioned on your Form 16 should match with the amount mentioned in Form 26AS.
  • Next, click on ITR forms and select the financial year for which you are filing the tax for. Download the form that is applicable to you.
  • After selecting the form, download and open the excel utility and fill it.
  • You can check the amount of tax that you have to pay by clicking on the ‘calculate tax’ tab.
  • Pay the tax and input the challan details in the form.
  • After completing the form in the excel worksheet, click on ‘validate’ to confirm the data.
  • Click on ‘Generate an XML File’. Once it is generated, save the same on your computer.
  • Go back on the website and click on ‘Upload Return’ and upload the XML file that you had saved.
  • The website will ask you to provide your digital signature. If you do not have one, then click on ‘No’.
  • The website will then generate an ITR-V (ITR Verification) form. Download it and take a print out.
  • Sign the form in blue colour ink and send it to the Income Tax Department by post.

Steps for filing ITR 4S and ITR-1:

If the forms ITR 4S and ITR-1 apply to you, then instead of following the above process, you can choose to submit them online using ‘Quick e-file ITR’ link. The steps to file ITR 4S and ITR-1 are as follows:

  • Open the tax e-filing website of the Income Tax Department of India and register on it.
  • Log on to the website. Here, your PAN (Permanent Account Number) is the userID.
  • Go to ‘e-file’ and select ‘Prepare and Submit ITR Online’.
  • Select the form and financial year.
  • Enter the details. Click on ‘Submit’.
  • If you have a Digital Signature Certificate, provide it. To use your Digital Signature Certificate, you have to register it in the e-filing application. To register, you have to log in to the e-filing website and update the signature in your profile settings.
  • Once you upload the signature, click on submit.
  • The website will display the ITR-V. Take a print out of the same.

You can also file your ITR on third party websites online, but to do so you might have to pay a service charge.
